The two images at the center of Pentecost in our readings are wind and fire. They help us to understand and know the Holy Spirit more tangibly just as we know wind by its feel and effects. And the Spirit, like fire, is interactive with, and within, us.

We are called to live in the world but not be of the world. As we live in the world, the Spirit empowers us to spread the Gospel and share in the ministry of bridging divides. When we live first to God, we live a sanctified life.

With a central focus on our readings from Acts, chapter 10, we learn of God’s desire to bridge cultures in their common faith in God. We find God’s desire for each culture, no matter how disparate, to recognize how the Spirit is at work in the other cultures and our human-created labels and separation should not impede our God-desired Oneness.
